Much as I dislike staying with my extended family, I obliged. The weather was very beautiful on the way down. Everything moves so slowly here - whilst Exeter town centre is just like any other city (I'll talk about this more later), the household is lethargic and methodical. It's peaceful, I admit. But sometimes it bores me.

However, yesterday I recieved from my aunts, uncle and cousins Christmas presents which they had decided it was better to give in real life than to post. The greatest and most wonderful surprise to me was Stage by Hedi Slimane, from Julia. I nearly burst into tears when I opened it but I like to appear austere to my emotionally distant cousins so I didn't, but the feeling was most definitely there. The other books I got were smaller and less expensive ones that I had asked for; when I added Hedi's books to my Amazon wishlist I was convinced at the time there was no way anyone would get them for me. And at £50+ each I wouldn't be able to get them myself (though of course Amazon often offers discounts). It's a huge, huge book, bigger than I ever expected. Like more than one brick.

I haven't yet looked through it all, however, because I spent all my time from yesterday afternoon to this morning reading another of my presents. It was a book I've been longing for since I read the Wikipedia article on the subject (and many other related articles; you might want to have a look at that if you plan to read the rest of this entry so you have an idea what I'm talking about) Underground by Haruki Murakami. It's not a novel as you might expect from him, but instead a collection of interviews with victims of a terrorist attack along with his own views and interviews with members of the organisation behind it all.
